Equity Vision Statement

Baker Charter Schools strives to promote safety and inclusion for students to thrive in a creative, flexible, and supportive learning environment. We value and affirm each student inclusive of race, ethnicity, gender identity, socioeconomic status, immigration status, ability, religion, and sexual/affectional orientation.

We will continually identify and remove barriers through:

  • Quality, Inclusive, and social justice-oriented curriculum and practice.
  • Providing ongoing equity training for the BCS community.
  • Creating equitable access to technology and resources.
  • Continually meeting each student’s individual needs.
  • Equitable recruitment and hiring practices.
  • Implementing and refining policies with the aim of dismantling institutional inequities.
  • Transformation of systems that contribute to inequities.
  • Empowering students to pursue their ideal futures as members of the global community.
Equity Team

The equity team is a group of staff that is dedicated to develop equity practices, policy, and being responsive to families needs. They will meet once a month to review our progress and continually work to ensure equity progress at BCS.

Our goal is to set up feedback loops with our students, parents, and staff to ensure all feel welcome and supported at Baker Charter Schools. Equity Laws and Policies

Laws and policies guiding BCS Equity Work

Every Student Belongs — The Every Student Belongs rule was passed by the State Board of Education in September of 2020 in response to student/parent feedback to the Oregon Department of Education. Schools are required to adopt a policy and have procedures set up by 1/1/21. We have developed a policy for both schools that is in alignment with the Oregon Department of Education and Oregon School Boards Association guidance. The policy is ACB and will receive final approval in the December 2020 board meeting. With this policy all symbols of hate are restricted from use, there is a bias complaint procedure ACB-AR, and sets up a school environment free of discrimination.

Equity Policies — There are a variety of policies addressing equity matters that form the basis of our work at Baker Charter Schools. Policies are developed by our school board in conjunction with Oregon School Boards Association, the administrative team, and our staff. Adi’s Act and Erin’s Law

Senate Bill 52 2019, also know as Adi’s Act, is a newer law that requires schools to have suicide prevention programs and instruction in place. The law also includes guidance around the procedures for prevention and mitigation of suicide in schools. As per required in this law we have a multi-tiered protection and mitigation plan in place at Baker Charter Schools. Each and every student in our school has value, purpose, and is loved. Regional counselors, advisory teachers, grading teachers, regional administrators and our Student Wellness Coordinators all work as a team to ensure student safety. We have also worked on integrating Adi’s act into our health curriculum for students.

Senate Bill 856 2015, also known as Erin’s Law, is a law that requires schools to provide age appropriate sex abuse prevention instruction. At Baker Charter Schools we know we serve a broad range of students so we will be sensitive in how we address this important topic. Students at our school have experienced a variety of abusive situations. Our goal is to provide prevention for all students and support for those who have experienced abuse.
